twittering and updating my facebook status whi...Image by mizinformation via Flickr

Mashable Social Networking News has proclaimed that Twitter has “Bounced Back!.”

I’m sure that many readers of this blog may not have realized that Twitter was falling, needed to bounce back,  or for that matter, that Twitter even existed.

Twitter is a microblogging service just into it’s second year on the net. It is a backbone of many personal networks. 140 character messages let communities know what’s happening and which other network has more information. For a good explanation of Twitter go to the Twitter Handbook Blog.

Twitter has bounced back from a decrease in users caused by a recent string of growing pains. The service has experienced huge growth and frankly, was not prepared. Many users began searching for alternatives and cut back on use. But, as Mashable explains better than I could, the service is on the mend.

Why would I care? And why should my faithful readers care?

First, I’m a contributor to the Twitter Handbook and I like being associated with successful stuff. I also use Twitter as an important part of my Personal Learning Network. I don’t want to rebuild a network some where else.

Many websites and services have come and gone on the internet during the last 15 odd years. It’s difficult to know which ones to invest time with.

And that brings me to why it matters to you.

You should be on Twitter. Whatever matters to you, whatever your, there are people like you on Twitter. Hundreds of thousands, of people post what they are doing 140 characters at a time. It’s a great link to people you want to know and read.

Go. Sign up. You’ll see. And follow me on Twitter. I’m wwhitlock.

  1. I love twitter. Let’s face it, it’s perfect aside from all through growth problems. The simplicity means it’s never become out-dated. I heop they can handle the proeblems.

  2. Yes Twitter is great. We should see less problems. Bezos, forgot his first name, the Amazon guy, has taken a seat on the board. He should be able to write a check and by enough servers to get up to capacity.

There is another money guy just coming on board too.

Of course, if Amazon buys Twitter….. fill in your own conjecture.

  3. o.k. I just don’t get it. It seems to me that this is just another blog only waaay shorter; and annoying. Explain to me why I need to know what another person/blogger is doing every minute of the day. If it is really important, can’t they just e-mail or give me a call?

Help me obi-wan kenobi, you are my only hope.

  4. @s’mee -

Patience Padawan, this too will be made clear.

It’s extending your network. Getting more and contributing more.

Here’s how it works for me. Most of the tweeple in my network are teachers, many are education technologists.

I’m looking for info about some new gizmo that the principle is all excited about. I Tweet about it and get some opinions.

One of my tweeps is going to demo a skill to new teachers and live streams it. She tweets the url and password to watch. Another just posted about a new product, he tweets the url. Somebody wants to set up a Skype call with a third grade class in North Carolina.

I decide who to follow and who to respond to. If somebody tweets about the roast beef at lunch to much, I drop them like I would a Nigerian Prince asking for my bank account info.

Yes it’s like blogging, email, email list, text messaging, and probably other stuff. It can update facebook and all those others. It’s very customizable with lots of other apps.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

  5. @wwhitlock - Oh my. I think I may be driving an old Buick. I hate to admit it, but I have no conferences, no educational, geeky types, or cool friends in my “network” -save you, of course- and the only live streams I get near have trout in them. hmmm. I guess I need to go shopping for more interesting peeps, um tweeps. Does your lovely and talented wife twitter? (or blog for that matter?) I will keep an open sidebar and continue to ponder this great and magical tool. Thanks.
